Mississippi Volunteer Lawyers Project’s Homeless Legal Clinic is organized with the help of several Jackson area law firms. Local volunteer attorneys spend their lunch hour each Tuesday at Stewpot Community Services, a local shelter in downtown Jackson, Mississippi, providing free legal counsel and advice to the poor, elderly, and disabled who are seeking counsel about their legal issues. The clinic does not handle criminal matters. The assistance provided often takes the form of a single consultation but occasionally extends further, depending on clients’ needs.

Often members of the participating firm accept pro bono referrals and consultation after the cases are screened and approved for eligibility. The clinic operates every Tuesdays at noon, except holidays. Currently, 12 firms participate in the program, each taking one month out of the year to staff the clinic. Although the firms have no set month for participation from year to year, with the coordinating help of Ryan Beckett, Esq. in Butler Snow’s Jackson office, the following firms participate in the clinic:

  • January: Butler Snow
  • July: Watkins Ludlam
  • February: Forman Perry
  • August: Brunini
  • March: Burr Forman
  • September: Baker Donelson
  • April: Daniel Coker
  • October: Wise Carter
  • May: Watkins & Eager
  • November: Adams & Reese
  • June: Bradley Arant
  • December: Phelps Dunbar
